A Beam of Bright Light

A Beam of Bright Light was written to celebrate 100 years in the life of a lighthouse. It tells the fascinating story of the Castlepoint Lighthouse, constructed and initially erected in the heart of Wellington City, New Zealand in 1912. The lighthouse was then dismantled and taken by steamer along the rugged Wairarapa coast, where it was reconstructed, panel by panel, on a rocky, limestone reef. This story covers the natural hazards of storms and earthquakes, as well as difficulties in transport and the many changes in technology over the last one hundred years.

Lighthouses never fail to fascinate both young and old and where there is coastline, there are lighthouses. Many lighthouses throughout the world are now automated and A Beam of Bright Light opens up the universal history, as well as the inner world of the lighthouse.
